Dr Tan established Calm Dental to work the way he thought dentistry should be practised: longer appointments, findings shown on screen rather than described, and treatment planned around what a tooth actually needs rather than what is quickest to do.

He founded the practice to close the gap between what the technology can now do and how it usually feels to be on the receiving end of it. His interest is in holistic protocols and digital dentistry, and in what he calls a health-first approach: treatment that is biologically sound first and good-looking as a consequence, rather than the other way round.

He taught in the NUS Dental Faculty for a decade and continues to attend conferences overseas. He is a father of three, which is most of what he will tell you about his patience with nervous children.
