Much of the practice’s gum treatment is Dr Chan’s, and it sits closer to the rest of his work than it might appear: a bite cannot be rebuilt on foundations that are still inflamed. Full-mouth rehabilitation — rebuilding a worn-down bite tooth by tooth — is slow, planned work, and it is the part of dentistry he is most interested in.
He qualified and practised in New Zealand before moving to Singapore, and speaks English, Mandarin and Cantonese.
Most of his postgraduate study has gone into the same problem from different directions. A Master of Science in Orthodontics at the University of Bolton, a Master of Clinical Dentistry in fixed and removable prosthodontics at King’s College London, and training at the Kois Center in Seattle all concentrate on occlusion — how the teeth meet, why a bite wears down, and how to rebuild one without repeating whatever destroyed it.
He provides both Invisalign and fixed braces, and uses mini-screws where a case needs anchorage that brackets alone cannot give. He practises as a general dentist: he is not on the Singapore Dental Council’s specialist register, and complex skeletal cases are referred to a registered specialist.
