Can I Use MediSave for Invisalign?

The short answer

No. MediSave covers a specific list of surgical dental procedures, and orthodontic treatment is not on it — not Invisalign, not fixed braces, not aligners from anyone. That is a national rule rather than a clinic policy, so no practice can claim it for you. Several things you may need alongside orthodontics are claimable, which is where the confusion usually comes from.

What MediSave actually covers in dentistry

MediSave is for surgical procedures. In dentistry that means things like surgical removal of a wisdom tooth, the surgical part of placing an implant, and certain gum surgery — each with its own claim limit set nationally.

It is not a general dental subsidy. Scaling, fillings, crowns, whitening and orthodontics all fall outside it, because none of them is a surgical procedure. That distinction is the whole logic of the scheme, and once it is clear the rest follows.

So why do people think orthodontics is covered?

Usually because something else in the same treatment plan was. Someone having four premolars removed before braces may well claim for those extractions if they were surgical. Someone having a wisdom tooth out to make room claims for that. The aligners themselves never were, but the bill had a MediSave line on it, and the memory sticks.

The other source is Flexi-MediSave, which lets older Singaporeans use MediSave for outpatient treatment at participating clinics. It has its own rules and its own annual cap, and orthodontics is not within them either.

What that means for planning

Treat orthodontics as a cash cost and plan it that way, rather than hoping a claim will soften it later. Ask for the full fee in writing before starting, including retainers and refinements, so there is nothing to discover at the end.

If any part of your plan does qualify — an extraction, a wisdom tooth, gum surgery — we will tell you which part and what the limit is before you commit, rather than leaving you to find out.

Insurance is a separate question

Some employer and personal dental plans do include orthodontics, often with a lifetime cap and often only for children. That is between you and your insurer rather than something a clinic can confirm, but it is worth asking them directly before you assume there is nothing.

Questions

Is it different for fixed braces?

No. The rule is about orthodontic treatment, not about the appliance, so fixed braces and clear aligners are treated identically. Neither is MediSave claimable.

What about the extractions I need before braces?

Those may well be claimable if they are surgical removals. It depends on the tooth and how it comes out, and we will tell you which of yours qualify before the appointment rather than afterwards.

Can Flexi-MediSave be used for it?

No. Flexi-MediSave widens what MediSave can be used for at participating clinics for older Singaporeans, but orthodontics stays outside it.

Does any clinic in Singapore let you claim MediSave for Invisalign?

No, because it is not a clinic-level decision. The claimable list is set nationally and applies to every dentist equally. Anyone suggesting otherwise is worth a second question.

How should I budget for it then?

Ask for the complete fee in writing before starting, covering scans, aligners, refinements and retainers rather than just the aligners. Our published fees page gives the range, and the written quotation after examination gives your number.
